Clients often ask me about how to keep a neutral palette from being "boring".
I submit for your consideration this picture (I don't know the source as it was sent to me by an inspired client) which provides an example of a lovely, restful room and yet is not at all boring.
The controlled and careful usage of a mid-intensity accent color gives it life and interest. Having a combination of interesting textures and restful patterns create an inviting welcome.
Swedish design has long featured similar color palettes created from soft, grayed, whispered tones. I believe that trend will soon be more prevalent in the U.S.
For the past few years, the furnishings, textiles, and paint markets have featured collections of deep toned products that have perhaps run their course...especially in the warmer, Southern regions.
If you would like to experience design in your home or work that is influenced by the 'land of the midnight sun', get ahead of the upcoming trend and select elements that will create a serene spa-like environment that will feel like a personal retreat.
- Choose a pale wash of color for your walls in soft whites and pale greys.
- Choose natural textures and finishes.
- Decorate with colors inspired by nature.
- Distressed and white-washed furniture as well as folk art and handmade items look right at home with these choices.
- Wooden floors, especially pine or other light colored wood, create a perfect stage for Nordic design.
- Modern and traditional styles blend beautifully in a Swedish inspired space. No need to choose one or the other. Add interest by using both!
"Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style."
